6 Questions for the Photographer https://www.buckshotimages.com/blog/2023/4/6-questions-for-the-photographer

Q: How did you get started in photography?

A: I started with a Kodak Instamatic when I was about 10 years old. I fashioned a darkroom in our basement and shot, developed and printed pictures of my family and my dog. In my 20’s I saved up and bought a Canon 35mm SLR and started a small business shooting portraits, sports teams and social events. I started shooting primarily boudoir in 2015 and have met some great people and had many rewarding experiences since.

Q: What is your favorite photographic genre to shoot?

A: Definitely the genre I specialize in: Boudoir and Glamour. No other style of portraiture encompasses the range of emotions, client joy and amazement throughout the experience. The satisfaction of seeing someone try something new and scary, and then loving it makes it so much fun.

Keeping it relaxed and fun makes for great images.

Q: What is Boudoir?

A: A Boudoir photo shoot is for any woman and is as much about the experience as it is the final images. Most of my clients are not professional models and have little or no experience posing in lingerie or less for the camera. The shoots traditionally take place in a client's home or a hotel and are often done to mark a significant age milestone, as a gift for a significant other or just as a treat to themselves. I like to expand on tradition and shoot in a wide variety of settings and make it a memorable and unique experience.

I love doing these kinds of shoots because of how enjoyable it is to see someone try something way outside of their comfort zone and then watch as they go from being nervous and anxious, to relaxed and having fun. This is when we get the best and most authentic images and I always love seeing their eyes well up with pride when they see the final images.

Q: How does is this different from Glamour?

A: I tend to use the terms interchangeably, but the traditional definition of Glamour typically involves experienced models. I often work with models for portfolio building and to try out different lighting concepts or when a marketing client needs a certain look. A very popular style of Glamour is a Vanity Fair magazine look that focuses more on the fashion aspect.

Q: Is it a challenge being a male boudoir photographer?

A: It can be from a marketing standpoint, but once I’m in front of a potential client I don't find it to be an issue. I know that regardless of the genre, a relaxed and confident subject produces the best results. I pride myself on my professionalism and my ability to make my clients feel safe and comfortable right from the beginning. The fact that the vast majority of my clients come back for additional shoots shows that this is the kind of experience where they can feel comfortable and free to express themselves.

Q: Where is the most unusual place that you have ever shot?

A: Oh wow, there have been a few. I’ve shot in an abandoned asylum in the middle of nowhere, in ponds, underwater, on frozen lakes, in pools, barefoot in snow, in trees, on city streets, on rooftops, at an abandoned cathedral, in a bank vault and on a Soviet attack helicopter.
